Depression affects millions of people in the United States, and in fact, several sources cite depression as the number one cause of disability across the country. There are a variety of depression treatments available and treatments for other mental health conditions.
Some people may seek a newer, more innovative treatment, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation or TMS therapy. At BoardPrep Recovery Center®, we offer various effective treatment programs, with experienced, licensed professionals guiding patients through assessment and treatment programs, including TMS Therapy. What Is TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy is a recent, innovative technique for treating depression and other mental health disorders when traditional or first-line treatments have not worked for an individual. When people feel that their conventional treatment for depression has not worked, that individual is not alone. Several sources indicate that many people do not get adequate beneficial relief from the first antidepressant medication prescribed for them.
TMS therapy is one of the newer personalized treatments offered by the highly-qualified treatment professionals at BoardPrep Recovery Center®. It involves using a small device on the outside of the body. It is entirely non-invasive throughout each treatment.
The doctor determines the landmark area of the brain called the prefrontal cortex. The doctor then attaches the stimulation coil to this area. They will then determine the appropriate adequate stimulation intensity by increasing the magnetic energy until there is a slight twitching of the fingertips or the hands. The treatment works by stimulating targeted areas of the brain and delivering pulses through the scalp to the area responsible for depression. The therapy stimulates the dormant neurons that affect the patient’s emotions.
Five Benefits of TMS Therapy
There are several benefits to receiving TMS therapy. Some benefits include:
- No side effects commonly experienced with traditional oral treatments such as weight gain or dry mouth
- Treatments are pain-free
- There is no anesthesia needed
- Often works for clients that have not obtained effective relief from other treatments
- Patients experience few to no side effects
The first benefit is that there is an absence of side effects commonly experienced when some people take oral antidepressants, which is likely a welcome benefit for patients. Weight gain, dry mouth, stomach upset, and possibly other side effects sometimes lead individuals to become frustrated with their treatment. The absence of these types of side effects likely makes TMS suitable for many individuals with depression or certain other mood disorders.
TMS addiction therapy is proving successful for some clients. Discuss this and the possible treatment for other mental health and addiction issues with one of our caring professionals.
Clients do not experience pain during treatment, and there is no anesthesia required at any TMS treatment appointment. Patients sit in a recliner for the treatment duration, alleviating any fears of pain or post-anesthesia effects.
Clients often obtain relief when other treatments have failed to provide adequate relief. This success is continually being studied, with the possibility of adjustments in the therapy as treatment continues.
There are minor side effects possible, such as headache or temporary scalp discomfort.
