As we enter into the month of June, it’s time once again to recognize Men’s Health Awareness Month. Every June since 1994, people across the country have dedicated this month to men’s health initiatives. It’s an important time to remember the many health issues that men face. Whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional, as we draw attention to men’s problems more of them will get the help they need. The Men’s Health Month Initiative
The men’s health month initiative started out as men’s health week. In 1994, Senator Bob Dole and Congressman Bill Richardson came together to sponsor a bill recognizing the week leading up to Father’s Day. The men’s health week sought to encourage men to greater health and to highlight men’s health challenges.
Goals of Men’s Health Awareness Month
In short, the main goal for Men’s Health Awareness Month is to inspire men to be more proactive in their healthcare. Through this initiative, people attempt to raise awareness about men’s diseases. It encourages men to seek preventative screenings and tests for diseases. For clarity, some of the things men can do to take better care of themselves are as follows:
Keep the heart healthy: Men have twice as many heart attacks than women, which means they need to work twice as hard to keep their heart in good shape.
Watch the weight: Carrying extra weight is hard on men’s heart and it leads to a plethora of other problems. Keeping the weight in a healthy range is vital to a healthy lifestyle.
Get moving: Regular exercise helps the two things mentioned above. You give your heart a workout and you’ll help maintain your weight through exercise.
Screen for cancer: Many cancer screenings are now available. Additionally, early detection offers the best outcome for cancer. Colon and rectal cancer are two screenings that men over the age of 50 should have. Additionally, your physician will advise you on others that may be necessary based on your family history.
Deal with mental health disorders: Mental health is important for physical health. That being said, if you have or suspect mental health issues, check with a therapist for mental health treatment.
Treat substance use disorder: Substance use disorder is a condition that affects many men. Whether it’s drugs, alcohol, or both, recovery can be found with professional addiction treatment.
Finding Treatment Programs
During the month of June, everyone can pitch in to remind men how important their health is to the community. You can “wear blue” on a designated day in June to show your support. Encourage the man in your life to be active by doing something with him that’s fun and involves movement. Try to get him involved with a regular program of exercise. Find out where the free health screenings and booths will be set up, then take him there.
